Statement Pieces

A statement piece is any artwork large and bold enough to define a room. Typically 36x48 inches or larger, with dramatic composition, vivid color, or striking subject matter. When someone walks into the room, the statement piece is the first thing they notice. It sets the entire mood.

As a rule, statement art should cover at least two-thirds of the wall width above your furniture. For a standard sofa, that means 48-60 inches wide. Generally, one per room keeps the impact strongest. Two statement pieces can compete for attention and cancel each other out. If you want multiple strong pieces, put them in different rooms or use one as a primary focal point and the other on an adjacent wall. For variety, add smaller eclectic gallery prints instead.

Almost any style can be a statement piece at the right scale. Bold abstract and color explosion prints are natural fits because their energy scales up beautifully. Use two hooks or a French cleat system for anything over 30 inches wide. Find studs whenever possible. Gallery-wrapped canvas is lighter than framed glass, which helps.
